Umar argues that the levels of graft in President Kenyatta-led government is worrying and could sink the country if the president does not act fast and firm.

''The president should declare a state of emergency. Let’s go down in history as the first nation to declare a state of emergency based outstanding levels of corruption,’’ she said in a post on her Facebook page.

Umar advised President Kenyatta to go for the top government officials who she claims are fleecing the country in graft scandals.

The former presidential candidate also wants the relevant agencies to push for recovery of stolen money and assets.

‘‘The government must freeze bank accounts and recover all stolen money and assets from suspects charged in court with graft,’’ she added.

Umar said that unless stolen money is recovered and perpetrators punished, corruption will remain a big hindrance to development.

The president has vowed to eliminate graft as he serves his final term in office.

He says that fighting graft is part of his legacy.

In recent months, top government officials have been arrested and charged in court over various graft scandals.
