The ongoing war of words between Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho and Kapseret lawmaker Oscar Sudi appears like the lawmaker's golden chance for political elevation.

The war broke out last week after Sudi accused the county chief of dealing in drugs, and has remained bullish and unwilling to apologize despite Joho's threats.

Though it might appear like just any other verbal encounter between people allied to rival groups, this could be his plan to begin elevating himself in the Rift Valley political arena.

The lawmaker seems to be using the publicity he is now receiving to endear himself to the Deputy President William Ruto, with the hope of appearing as his defender and get a space closer to him.

Should the plan succeed, if that is indeed the plan, Sudi might end up receiving special attention from the DP, which would make him a strong figure in Rift Valley politics.

This way, he might succeed in overtaking the likes of Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen as Ruto's likely successors as Rift Valley kingpin.

The plan could also be to gain admiration among Ruto's supporters, considering that Joho has been an anti-Ruto campaigner, which might make his plans for the 2022 elections a success in waiting.

Being on his second term as a lawmaker, the vocal MP is very unlikely to run for the same seat in 2022, and this could be his ticket to getting a bigger slot in the race.

He could also be eyeing a top government slot should Ruto's 2022 presidential bid go through.
