Many only know him as Senator James Orengo, the lawmaker for Siaya County within the larger Luo Nyanza region.

Others, especially his constituents and members of the Luo community have nicknamed him 'Ajimmy', a title derived from his Christian name.

However, the case was different in the 90s and early 2000s, when Orengo appears to have been a stronger force in the vote-rich region.

At the time, the then Ugenya Member of Parliament was known as 'Nyatieng', a title that seems to have faded off and only remembered by a few.

The name became more popular when he challenged opposition leader Raila Odinga, his boss currently, into a political duel.

The latter found it hard to agree with Raila's 2002 decision to merge the opposition's National Development Party (NDP) with the ruling KANU party then led by President Daniel Moi.

He marshalled a group five of like-minded people; Anyang' Nyong'o (Kisumu Rural), Joe Odonde (Gem) Shem Ochuodho (Rangwe), Dalmas Otieno (Rongo) and Oloo Aringo of Alego Usonga to oppose the move.

Orengo formed his Social Democratic Party (SDP) to fight Raila, in what was termed an Agwambo and Nyatieng' duel.

Raila won, leaving Orengo to suffer for the next 3 years before rejoining the former prime minister in 2005.

He went ahead to regain his Ugenya seat in the 2007 polls after losing it in the 2002 polls.
