Professor Mohamed  Yusuf Elmi is the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party's candidate in the upcoming Wajir West by-election.

Elmi was picked after former Wajir West MP Mohamed Kolosh quit the Orange Party.

Last week, ODM National Elections Board chairperson Judith Pareno confirmed that professor Elmi will fly the party’s ticket in the April 25 mini-poll.

Elmi has since exuded the confidence of being voted as the next Wajir West MP.

Here is what you need to know about Professor Elmi.

He was born and raised in Wajir County.

He was appointed as Rongo University Vice Chancellor in 2016.

The professor quit his job in the run-up to the August 8, 2017, general election.

Professor Elmi unsuccessfully contested the 2017 Wajir West parliamentary seat on Wiper Democratic Movement ticket.

He lost the 2017 poll to Kolosh.

Elmi is a businessman with investments in the agricultural sector.

He is married and has a family.

Political analyst Peter Ngure observes that Elmi will is among the candidates to watch out in the April 25 by-election.

Other candidates eyeing the by-election are Abdirahman Mohamud flying the KANU ticket, Yakub Dahiye contesting on Amani National Congress (ANC),  Mohamed Khalif vying on Party of Development Reforms and Abbas Nunow of Agano Party.
