Garissa Township Member of Parliament and House Majority Leader Aden Duale is a household name in Kenya.
Hardly a week passes without his name featuring in the news.
Kenyans know him as a hard-hitting political operator but few are acquainted with his hardscrabble background.
The MP was not born into riches as many would think but had to struggle with grinding poverty as a kid.
In an interview with embattled Citizen Television journalist Jacque Maribe 2015 in Garissa, Duale spoke about the myriad challenges that he encountered while growing up.
He said that he had to wear shorts with patches as he didn't have many clothes.
"My late dad was pastoralist, he didn't believe in education. The unfortunate thing is that we did not have any other clothes at home. The first time I wore slippers was in class eight," Duale said.
Duale would later become a renowned politician with a national stature.
With grit and hard work, he has been able to wriggle himself out of poverty and owns multi-million properties in his home county of Garissa and the capital Nairobi.
