Former Makadara Member of Parliament Benson Mutura has poured cold water on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) founded by President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The two formed a 14-member team to boost their 2018 truce, deploying it to crisscross the country in search of answers to the nation's recurrent political and social wrangles, especially after election seasons.
However, the former TNA MP opines that the team, which he termed as unconstitutional, is only wasting taxpayer's monies in its tours, adding that its final report is very predictable, judging by Raila's latest remarks.
Speaking on Radio Jambo's Mazungumzo Waziwazi show on Saturday, Mutura said that Raila's assurances that a referendum is inevitable is proof that the task force has been manipulated and will finally issue a similar final finding.
"Don't wait for a very important report because Raila has said he wants a referendum and he is among those who selected the task force members. They should just come out and tell us this is what we have been told (Msingoje ripoti ya maana sana maana Raila amesema yeye anataka referendum na yeye pia amechagua wale watu. Wakuje tu watuambie hivi ndio tumeambiwa)," he said.
He also stressed on the need for members of the ruling Jubilee Party to keep off issues to do with the handshake and the said looming referendum until a common ground is reached.
According to Mutura, the party's inability to convene a meeting with its members compels its members to keep off the debate until a meeting it convened.
"Jubilee should first convene a meeting. However, they have not been called for a meeting (Jubilee wanafaa wakae kikao kwanza, na hawajaitwa)," he added.
This comes at a time when the party members have taken different sides on the issue, with Uhuru's supporters uniting under the 'Kieleweke' umbrella and Deputy President William Ruto's supporters fighting it under the 'Tanga Tanga' tag.
