Deputy President William Ruto has urged Garissa and North Eastern youths to shun crime and terror related activities.
The Deputy President instead wants the youth to engage their county governments for employment opportunities.
Speaking in Garissa Town on Monday, the DP said that the national government is concerned over the high rate of young people who are engaging in crime and terror activities in Northern Kenya.
The Deputy President said that terrorism does not help, noting that it is time young people from the region denounced terror groups.
He asked the county governments to reach out to the young people and fully engage them.
“Terrorism is evil and I urge young people from this region not to be lured by terror masterminds and sympathisers,” he said.
The DP said that the national government will continue to deploy more security personnel in Northern Kenya to hunt down terror elements.
He also said that the government will issue an amnesty for youth who have been lured into terror activities to denounce and reform.
North Eastern and specifically Garissa has in recent years been hit with deadly terror activities leading to the loss of lives and property.
In April 2015, 147 students were massacred when Al-Shabaab terrorists stormed Garissa University College.
The deadly terror attack shocked the world with leaders condemning it.
Security has since been heightened at the institution and the larger Garissa County.
