As they embraced the youthful speaker, some started singing songs of praises, a clear signal that they are not ready to let the speaker go.

Rumours about Teya's impending impeachment dominated throughout his absence with former deputy speaker Duke Omoti said to have mobilised a section of his colleagues ahead of impeachment.

"The speaker was welcomed by enthusiastic MCAs. Virtually all of them are in support of his leadership," said Nelson Osiemo, his close ally.

Jared Ogeto said: "To dream that you can impeach the speaker who has people's backing, you're just wrong. Just do something else."

Mr Omoti, who was kicked out over abuse of office in August, is said to be plotting for Teya's ouster, a move that has divided the fragile assembly.

Nominated MCA George Mosiori, insisted that cartels were on speaker's neck, adding that MCAs will stand with him.

"To imagine that you can impeach the speaker is just illusionary. We know cartels are unhappy but be sure he's here to stay."
