Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula has opposed the push to amend the constitution to create more positions for some individuals.
Mr Wetangula said a section of leaders are misleading Kenyans and using the referendum for their personal interests.
The senator said those leaders are calling for a referendum in order to resurrect their political lives.
Speaking at Terem Primary School and Butonge High School grounds in Bungoma County on Friday, Mr Wetangula said leaders from Western Kenya will only support a referendum if it’s to benefit the lives of Kenyans.
“We will not allow the constitution to be amended by a few leaders for their self-resurrection. We want change to be for the people and not for those leaders who want to resurrect their political lives. There are two options available to us on the issue about changing of this constitution. Article 256 says we can use Parliament and Article 257 through the public. The one that will go through people should not be used to support politicians who want to resurrect their careers,” said the senator.
Also present was Deputy President William Ruto who urged leaders to focus on development adding that it was necessary to engage in meaningful activities instead of politicking.
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader Raila Odinga had called for the amending of the Constitution saying that referendum will focus on changing the governance structure.
