Ousted Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi and former Nairobi Deputy Governor Jonathan Mueke on Monday opposed Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s calls to extend President Uhuru Kenyatta's term in office.
The two were guests at Citizen TV’s Day Break Show.
They insisted that the Constitution should be a guiding principle that should always be followed
“Let us follow what the law says. Let us accept that our constitution has been so democratic in terms of the president’s term,” said Elachi.
On the other hand, the former Nairobi deputy governor insisted that term limits have a good reason.
According to Mueke, a new person should come into power after 10 years which is two terms for a president.
The two leaders’ sentiments come days after the former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka evoked mixed reactions last week.
On Friday, Kalonzo held a meeting with other Kamba leaders in Machakos where he noted that the constitution was biased and only favored a winner.
He called for a Constitutional review and also added that should Uhuru ask for another term in office, he would support him.
“Tuungane, with other communities, tumsaidie ndugu Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta. Kama atasema, after the new Constitution tumeiunda, ‘mimi nataka kuendelea mbele’ ntamwambia nitakusupport,” said Kalonzo.
This loosely translates as: "Let’s come together with other communities and help our brother Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta. If he says, after the new Constitution, that he wants to proceed I will support him.”
