On Wednesday 20th February 2019, during the launch of a 5-year strategic plan, The Ministry of Education and HELB (Higher Education Loans Board) announced they will involve the police to get defaulters going forward.
According to the Ministry, over 74, 000 beneficiaries are yet to repay their loan amounting to over Sh7.2 billion.
Kenyans took on Twitter to react and here are some of the hilarious reactions.
"Waiting for the government to set aside several million to be used in tracking down HELB defaults, instead of using that money to start clearing of the 7.2billion. Our priorities as a country are at times upside down!" wrote Dennis Wechuli.
"HELB, where are those prisons you gonna take us,muone vile vijana watajipeleka(see how youths will scramble to go)free food, shelter and clothing and no working..sounds pretty, kuliko kuhustle hapa nje na hakuna kakitu(than hustling outside and getting nothing)" said Winrose.
"HELB excuse my bluntness if law enforcement can’t even arrest those who loot this country How are they going to arrest the girlchild and boychild. Relax and scrutinize the 6 billion being looted as we speak," wrote Ali Hassan.
"I want Cs Amina to arrest us, take us to court then jail us and then wait for us to pay the HELB loan from the jails," wrote Steve Ocharo.
"Let the govt recover all stolen money, more than 600 billion, deduct the 7.4B and pay helb, the remaining can build industries to employ us," wrote Mwenjeri Gichuka.
"Dear Hleb Defaulters.-How about we hunt down all thieves who have stolen from our coffers since independence.-How about we reclaim all land under the Kenyatta and the Moi's.-How about we hunt down all those who have killed our parastatals," wrote Ruhiu Solomon.
"Kenya Breweries please pay my HELB nilikunywa pesa yote(I used all my money on drinking),Java Kenya nilileta warembo wakule apo nyi pia mnanisaidia kulipa(I came with ladies, you will have to help me repay) Safaricom PLC mnanijazia iyo pesa nisishikwe ju ya helb(You know yourself) Crazy Nairobian ,K J Mpoa Charlie Flani, Larry memes, Theo Mwangi please pay my helb," wrote Keem.
"If they want the remaining money, I would advise CS Amina to visit Fountain Pub along University Way or Sabina Joy Pub because I used to visit those places with their money in my wallet but came out with empty wallets in the morning. HELB," wrote Collins Sakwa.
