At a function in Kapsabet Boys last year, Onyonka vowed to deliver Gusii votes for the DP, arguing that he's the only focused and formidable candidate for the seat.

"I want to assure you that entire Kisii and Nyamira regions will back your bid. You have done a lot for us and we remain grateful," said Onyonka, adding that he was ready to traverse the region for Ruto's sake.

On Tuesday, Onyonka, the son of former minister Zachary Onyonka, said that Kenyan politics are dynamic and that he had made a decision to quit Ruto's camp.

"Our Kenyan politics is dynamic. If I take a position and find it untenable, I change the mind on it. It is true I have broken up with the deputy president ," he said.

The Ford Kenya legislator, who is serving his third term, accused Ruto's camp of unfairly targeting Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i in the gold scandal.

"This is cheap politics which Ruto's allies like Aisha Jumwa play. We know those who have stolen public resources, Matiangi is not a thief. The thieves are known and they should be arrested and prosecuted," he said.

He added: "Those who were selling fake gold were doing their own private business. There politicians who were mentioned in Kimwarer and Arror dams scandal and no action has been taken upon them to date."
