A section of Kisii County residents on Monday held peaceful demonstrations in Kisii town in what they claimed was increased cases of dubious land dealings.
The protesters led by Gusii Governance Watch secretary general Rachael Otundo and chairman Peter Momanyi claimed that cartels were grabbing land in Kisii without any legal action being taken.
"Kisii land registrar Steve Mogaka personally admitted that land grabbing is ongoing in Kisii. The cartels must be forced to return the grabbed land and be arrested to face prosecution for forging land documents," said Otundo who also slammed police officers for interfering with the peaceful demos.
The vocal Human Rights activist vowed to continue mobilizing Kisii residents to hold peaceful demos until land grabbing comes to an end in Kisii.
She said the government should consider deploying four land registrars to Kisii lands office.
Momanyi on his part called for the immediate removal of the Kisii land registrar.
"Mogaka must be transferred because since he was brought to Kisii lands office, cases of land grabbing are at the peak," he claimed.
In response, the Land Registrar Steve Mogaka, however, assured locals that cases of land grabbing in the county soon come to an end.
"The public should be patient and be supportive to fight land grabbers," said Mogaka.
