IEBC Chairperson Wafula Chebukati proposal for National Polls to be divided into two, national government and County Government elections to be done separately, speaking during the 2017 post-election evaluation report has received mixed reactions among Kenyans.
Evans Josia a Kisii County residence agrees with the proposal.
“The proposal is good, it will prevent stealing of votes though expensive at least leaders will gain seats rightfully without using mischievous means,” Josia spoke.
According to Dablin Momanyi at Kisii Town, this proposal will be more expensive and furthermore give room for more stealing of votes.
“I think an election should be done on a single day and all materials availed at the polling stations in time to avoid the inconveniences we have seen in the past elections,” Momanyi said.
Charles Omboge has lost faith in the electronic system. He says Chebukati should step down and a new chairperson to be appointed.
“I am tired with Kenyan politics it has no impact in my life I am only concerned about my children’s welfare,” Charles said.
If this proposal is passed by parliament it will mean Governors, Senators and MCA will be elected on their own day while the president, MPs, and women rep on their own day.
According to Chebukati this proposal is the only way for credible and transparent elections.
“The staff work from 6 am to 5 pm and then converting the polling stations into counting stations. This is not good for purpose of having a transparent and credible election and it causes fatigue to the staff,” Chebukati statement.
The last election cost the taxpayer Sh 54billion plus Sh 12 billion for re-election, therefore, the proposal will make more expensive considering we are among the high spending countries on election budget in the region.
