Ms Alice Anyango and Frederick Juma were nabbed after being found in possession of bags of sugar reportedly stolen while on transit.

They were brought before senior resident magistrate Millicent Nyigei at a Nyando court where they denied the allegations before being released on Ksh1 million bond with a surety each.

Nyanza Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) boss Michael Baraza told the Friday Nation that the lorry transporting the sugar was ambushed around Nyakatch in Kisumu on the night of Friday last week.

The lorry, which is reported to belong to Sony Sugar Company, was later tracked to Katito, within the same region, but with its driver Victor Otieno dead and the 10.5-tonne consignment missing.

According to the  Friday Nation, the two were arrested in Kisumu on Friday, alongside 4 others who are also facing charges of being in possession of the stolen product.

The mentioning of the case has been set for Tuesday next week and the hearing set to begin on February 18.

Meanwhile, the suspects will spend the next few days at the Kodiaga Prison pending the processing of their bonds.
