The beneficiaries include children, youth, women and the elderly.

The program is being implemented by the Machakos County Government with full sponsorship from the Jubilee Insurance Company. There has been a screening of residents across the county in the past six weeks.

The six days initiative was launched by Machakos First Lady Lillian Ng'ang'a at Machakos Level 5 Hospital on Thursday.

“I thank the Jubilee Insurance for sponsoring this programme. I met Dr Macharia three months ago, eight weeks later the program is here today,” said Ng'ang'a.

Ng'ang'a said she is happy with the Universal Health Care program since the initiative will enable residents to receive medical services at the grassroots levels without necessarily travelling to Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

"This is a great program in the backdrop of the Univeral Health Care Coverage to be launched in Our County on December 1," Ng'ang'a said.

“Residents in the furthest sub-counties across the county such as Masinga, Yatta, and Mwala will now get medical services in public health facilities near them, they do not need to get to Machakos headquarters for health services,” she added.

The Machakos County First Lady further pointed out that, “When you are hearing, you are able to live. I am keen on the health sector, I work with children a lot and I am happy to hear that most of the patients are children. We are ready for any partnership with all who want to partner with us not only in the health sector but also in other development projects."

Ng'ang'a said those targeted with the program are residents with mild to moderate hearing loss.

She said such patients will have their hearing abilities restored.

Jubilee Insurance Company’s representative Judy Cheruiyot said “Operations Ear Drop” is one of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes.

Cheruiyot said the program was launched by the company in 2017 during its 80th-anniversary celebrations and has provided free screening and operations to underprivileged children across the country.

“There is a need in the society for people who have hearing problems. As a company, we have supported 26 patients at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), 9 beneficiaries in Gertrude Hospital and now 37 others are lined up for the same in Machakos County,” Cheruiyot said.

Dr Gachambi Mwangi, ENT specialist at the Machakos Level 5 Hospital said the surgeries have been going on since Wednesday.
