Locals on Wednesday while speaking at Kegogi market in Kisii county protested the abnormal fare charge by motorists plying Kisii-Nyatieko-Kegogi route.

Albert Onsombi claimed that Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) are now charging Sh80 from Nyatieko to Kisii town unlike the past when they used to charge between Sh40-50.

He accused the matatu operators of being rude and disrespectful to passengers.

"Matatu operators are harassing us when we question them why they have hiked fare. It is high time Interior Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang'i should order the arrest of rogue motorists who are overcharging us," he said.

Ezekiel Maonda protested that he paid Sh150 from Kisii-Kegogi yet the fare has been Sh80-100.

According to Maonda, matatu operators are not doing justice to poor people travelling from Kisii-Kegogi and vice versa.

Robert Osoti, a matatu driver plying the route dismissed the locals saying matatu operators have every right to hike fare due to hiked fuel prices.

"It is important for locals complaining about hiked fares to know that we buy fuel for the vehicles expensively and not water. Anyone who doesn't want to use public service transport means is free to walk," he stated.
