A family in Rangwe has been thrown into mourning after one of its members was killed by a phone explosion.
Mary Akinyi reportedly died after her phone that was charging exploded, killing her instantly and leaving her husband with serious injuries.
The incident happened on Sunday night while the couple was sleeping in their home at Kadibuoro village, Rangwe constituency.
Confirming the incident, area Chief Kennedy Okoko said that investigations have been launched into the incident.
"We have liaised with the police so that they conduct investigations into the matter,” he told the Standard.
According to the deceased's in-law Nathan Ochieng', the incident happened after lightning struck the solar panel serving the house with power at the roof of the house.
“Efforts of family members to rescue Akinyi proved futile since she was already overwhelmed by the burns. It was an unprecedented incident in this area,” he said.
The husband, Patrick Yala, is currently receiving treatment at Ndiru health center while the body of the deceased was moved to the Rosewood hospital morgue.
