A section of farmers in Uasin Gishu county now says they will not sell their maize to National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
The farmers led by Uasin Gishu Kenya Farmers Association (KFA) director Kipkorir Menjo said the decision has been reached following low prices that the government set for the produce this season.
“As farmers from Uasin Gishu, we have decided we will not sell our maize to NCPB unless they review their prices from the currentSh2,300 to at least Sh3,200 per 90-kilogram bag,” said Menjo in Eldoret town, Friday.
He noted that the price that was approved by the Cabinet in December last year cannot commensurate the amount of money a farmer incurs from planting to harvesting season.
“It is better we stay with our maize at home rather than selling at a throwaway price. As I am talking, farmers from the North Rift region are in possession of over 13 million bags of maize they harvested in 2018,” said the Uasin Gishu KFA director.
He also warned that should the government insist on Sh2,300 price, they will have no other alternative than to sell their maize to millers.
Menjo further said maize farmers in the North Rift want to meet President Uhuru Kenya in person so that he can solve their woes once and for all.
He revealed that they have already sent the request to meet him and they are now waiting for a response.
