The race for the forthcoming Embakasi South parliamentary by-election is gaining momentum as politicians who are eyeing the seat lobby for votes.
The seat was declared vacant after the Supreme Court nullified Julius Mawathe's August 8, 2017 election.
The immediate former MP was elected on a Wiper party ticket.
The Apex court in its ruling said the Embakasi South parliamentary election was not free and fair.
It ordered the IEBC to conduct a fresh election within 90 days.
Kalonzo Musyoka's Wiper party has since declared support for Mawathe in the by-election.
The party's leadership had said it will not field any other candidate other than Mawathe.
Last week, Mawathe received a major boost after a section of Jubilee party politicians led by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria vowed to support his candidature.
Kuria said their support for Wiper candidate is in the handshake's spirit.
Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has exuded confidence of Wiper retaining the seat.
Muthama asked other Kamba politicians who could be planning to contest the seat to shelve their plans.
Political analyst and lawyer Danstan Omari says the Embakasi South by-election is a do or die affair for Kalonzo.
Omari says the by-election will determine the direction Kalonzo will take in regards to his 2022 presidential election.
“The Embakasi South by-election means a lot to Kalonzo and he will do everything to ensure the party retains the seat,” said Omari.
He addressed the press outside Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi on Friday.
Omari said it will be a plus for Kalonzo if his party retains the seat.
He, however, observed that it will be a blow for the former Vice President if he loses the seat.
