The mystery surrounding the death of an alleged suspect in the Garissa former CEC's shooting is constantly deepening with police statements raising more queries than answers.
That the suspect killed himself at a toilet within the cells using his jacket lining does not add up.
Given the fact that the suspect Mr David Mwai was the prime suspect in the case linking governor Ali Korane to the attempted murder, the untimely 'suicide' may be one of the many cases of witness tampering.
Issuing a statement on David Mwai's death, police spokesperson Charles Owino on Saturday said the suspect was found dangling on a toilet within the cells and that is when they tried to resuscitate him but to no avail.
This statement alone raises more questions.
A suspect within police custody is under 24 hours surveillance and even when one goes to relieve himself, there is a time when long is too long for the call.
It should have been expected that the police manning the cells would have stormed into the toilets to ascertain what was going on given the fact that the suspect took quite some time before he was found in the near-dead condition.
With these, the police need to come out clearly on their role in the suspect's death.
They should precisely explain the events leading to Mwai's death within their custody.
