A funeral ceremony in Kisii turned chaotic after angry mourners clobbered a man who was hawking bananas during the Sunday event.
Mourners who had attended the ceremony held at Gesibo village in Masabo, Kisii County descended on the hawker identified as Zachary Mororo with kicks and blows, faulting him for conducting business at a funeral.
“Mororo has been having a bad habit of hawking products at funerals. He turned up at the funeral to hawk ripe bananas only for mourners who were his target customers to turn against him and beat him up,” said area Nyumba Kumi Chairman Linus Bosire.
Mr Bosire said it took the intervention of Nyumba Kumi officials who had attended the funeral to save Mororo from the jaws of death.
“Hawkers should stop conducting their business at funerals because Mororo could have been killed. He was taken to the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment,” he noted.
Kisii County Assistant Police Commander Caleb Matoke confirmed the incident saying the victim is responding well to medication.
He, however, warned members of the public against taking part in mob justice.
“Hawkers should keep off funerals and the public should also not take the law into their own hands,” said Matoke.
