Corporal Richard Githaka Karanja was arrested over the weekend again and flown to Nairobi and is currently being held at the Buruburu Police Station.

A team had been sent to Mandera to arrest the corporal after he was rescued by his colleagues.

“Action will be taken in the end. That was uncalled for and cannot go unpunished,” said one senior officer as quoted by nation.co.ke.

Corporal Karanja had been arrested on Thursday in connection with a robbery with violence incident at a petrol station in Mandera that left a guard dead and at least Sh700, 000 stolen last week.

14 officers attached to the Rapid Deployment Unit in Mandera Kapendo Camp went to the station on Thursday night to demand the release of their colleague who was being held at the Mandera Police Station which is about 5kms from their camp.

The officers while on foot made their way to the police station in full combat gear and begun shooting in the air demanding for the key to the cell where Karanja was being detained.

After freeing Karanja, the AP officers fired again in the air and left on foot to their camp and fortunately, no one was hurt and no other prisoner escaped from the cell during the incident.

The 14 AP officers who stormed the Mandera Police Station have also been summoned to Nairobi for disciplinary action.
