The survey, which was conducted by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) revealed that there is a huge gap between learners and teachers as far as sex education is concerned.

The report revealed that students have been engaging in sex at young ages because the teachers are not ready to guide them over the same. The researchers said that the lack of preparedness has affected learners in the pursuit of their education.

The survey was conducted in 78 public schools across the country. The report also said that the teachers who make an effort to teach students often give them wrong information on the subject matter.

The survey further records that 60% of the teachers do not guide students on the right way to use condoms because they emphasise on abstinence.

“Moreover, 71 per cent of teachers emphasized abstinence as the best or only method for preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, and most depicted sex as dangerous or immoral for young people,” reads the report

The development comes at a time when there has been a rise in cases of school going children engaging in premature sex at different levels. Early this year, schools were put on notice over teaching comprehensive sex education.
