In recent weeks, Uhuru warned government functionaries against engaging in early campaigns adding that he's focused deliver on his promises.

A Nyamira MP who spoke in confidence said that the minister will no longer feature in DP William Ruto's campaigns any time soon.

"The directive was clear and that is why you no longer see him with us," he said.

The second term MP added: "Seems the president was quite serious about the matter and I don't think the minister will ever campaign."

For the better part of this year, Matiang'i's frequent visits in Gusii region were synonymous with pundits linking him to either Kisii or Nyamira gubernatorial seat.

And in a number of those functions, Matiang'i openly endorsed DP Ruto's 2022 bid.

Equally, MPs allied to Ruto's camp from the region also backed him for running mate position on grounds that he was competent and that the Gusii community, with 1 million votes, was ready to play second fiddle.
