Safaricom PLC recently rolled out a free Facebook access deal that enables social media users to engage on the platform without data charges.
The free partnership between Safaricom and Facebook while still ensuring the privacy and security information of users is protected, will be allowing mobile users on the network a chance to spend less on data.
The deal is however limited to the certain version of Facebook and does not include viewing content outside Facebook. One will incur data charges to view links to articles or external videos.
"We're pleased that Safaricom is offering you the ability to access Facebook without data charges," Facebook stated in a detailed explanation to users.
Furthermore, the free Facebook deal does not include the viewing of some photos and videos on Facebook. It is designed such that one can easily switch from free mode to data mode in order to view photos and videos.
"In order to help us evaluate the success of this service, and to enable us and your operator to understand your use of Facebook's services, we may exchange some limited information with Safaricom (including any of its group companies)," appealed Faceebok in a notification to its users.
Instructions on how to switch from one mode to the other are clearly illustrated and users are given an option of turning off the modes.
Facebook users have been informed that they can grant Safaricom permission to give Facebook periodic access to their phone number, load balance and promo balance so as to enable the success of the feature.
Safaricom and Facebook will, therefore, exchange users' information such as phone numbers, the amount of data you use and your load and promotional balance.
Facebook says the details would be shared with the giant telco in order to let them evaluate the success of this service.
Kenyans are yet to share their experiences on the free Facebook deal as the deal is only a few weeks old.
New Facebook users will be required to opt into the Facebook Flex programme to experience the full Facebook for free for fifteen (15) days. Their data bundles will not beconsumed as they access Facebook.
Customers outside the Safaricom network will not be able to access the Facebook Flex and FreeBasics products.
Safaricom has also allowed returning Facebook customers free access to Facebook for 3 days. One only be deemed to be a returning customer if you have been inactive on Facebook for fifteen (15) days.
