As the festive season sets in the coastal ferry users will have to squeeze by using the remaining ferries at the Likoni channel.
Kenya's largest ferry Mv Jambo which operates at the Likoni channel has been withdrawn from service. The ferry is expected to be out of service for approximately two weeks as it undergoes repair at the African Marine and General Engineering Company (Amgeco).
Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) in a statement issued out on Wednesday pleaded with members of the public who use the Likoni channel to be patient.
“The repairs are estimated to take two weeks. We appeal to our esteemed customers and stakeholders for patience and understanding during this period when our flagship ferry will be out of service,” KFS stated as quoted by Nation.
The MV Jambo which was withdrawn carries approximately1,600 people together with 64 vehicles. Reports from Nation indicate that MV Kwale and MC Nayo had been withdrawn from service.
“Mv Nyayo was withdrawn on Tuesday evening after it developed mechanical problems. Mv Kwale is out for repairs. The two might be back soon as their repair works are minor,” an officer from KFS told the Nation.
However, this poses a standoff at the Likoni channel by the ferry users as many will be forced to wait for long hours to cross the channel. Further, the festive season is just around the corner and this might not be the best time. On the other hand, some would argue saying better safe than sorry.
The Senate Committee on Transport and Infrastructure had proposed for ferries which are old be withdrawn for the safety of the people. This is after it was established that some of the ferries were too old to be operational. The sentiments were supported by KFS.
