Collymore is stepping down because of health-related issues

It has also emerged that Kenya wants Collymore to be replaced by a local after he exits office in August. There has been a delay in the announcement of his replacement with details remaining scanty over the same.

On Tuesday, Safaricom Board Chairman Nicholas Nganga said that the government has insisted that a foreigner will not take over the position upon his departure from office. He also said that there will be deliberation on the successor.

"This will be subject of deliberation by the board and once a decision is made it will be communicated at the appropriate time," Nganga said in a statement, as quoted by Daily Nation.

He also said that Collymore has shown great improvement in his health. He also said that he will remain in charge of the firm until his term in office ends.

Nganga hailed Collymore for his great performance since he took over office. In 2017, he took a medical leave after he was diagnosed with cancer.

The diagnosis is considered among the reasons he wants to leave the office. Collymore led the firm, which has more than 30 million clients across the nation.
