Life is full of surprises. Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua is among Kenyans with stories to tell. Mutua wasn’t born in a rich family as many Kenyans think. Raised in Kibera slums, Mutua believed that one day he would become one of the most influential leaders in Kenya, a dream which has come true. The second-term county boss was born in Masii before his family moved to the slums, a place that taught him what it means to live in abject poverty.

Life in slums was not a walk in the park. Eating three meals per day was a nightmare. Wearing new clothes was a farfetched dream. Mutua recalls sleeping without food not only once, twice but several times.

His parents were so poor that they could not afford to provide three meals per day for the family.

Mutua studied at Dagoretti High School (O level) and at Jamhuri High School (A level).

He was later enrolled at Whitworth College in the United States where he graduated with a BA in Journalism before proceeding to Eastern Washington University for his MSc in Communication. Mutua revealed that he has a sister named Ann. There is little known about the sister, but it is clear she played a role in changing his early life.

“I have a sister called Ann. I was born in Machakos, but I grew up in Makina area, Kibera slums in Nairobi. My parents were poor civil servants,” Mutua said.

Mutua has lived and worked in different places including USA, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates.
