Special teams of officers have been sent to villages in Nyeri and Limuru to piece together details on gunmen who attacked Dusit2D hotel in Nairobi.
The team was deployed after it emerged that two of the gunmen were born and raised in Nyeri and Limuru.
One of the gunmen, 26-year-old Eric Kinyanjui, is said to come from Ngecha Village in Limuru, While Salim Gichunge alias Farouk, is said to have been raised in Majengo slum in Nyeri.
The details were milked from the documents found in their pockets as well as in Farouk’s house in Ruaka.
A police source told the Star that the two converted to Islam recently and their action must be a result of massive brainwashing by the Al-Qaeda offshoot, Al Shabaab, operating in Somalia.
“They converted to Islam recently and we believe they were brainwashed by Al Shaabab,” the source told the paper.
Another police source said the attackers left a trail of ‘footpaths’ that will be of great help to Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.
“We already have a woman who was living with Farouk. We have also cordoned his house. A phone was recovered from the car they used. This time around, there are lots of footpaths left for us to unmask the killers well,” he said.
According to the sources, the special teams will collect all the necessary information from family and friends about the killers.
This will help them know if there is a running network or cell currently in Kenya, the officer said.
