Just a few days ago, a Garissa-based human rights activist claimed that two powerful politicians were planning to assassinate her at an unspecified time and location.
Prezo Nazlin Umar, in a statement, expressed fear over her life claiming that Deputy President William Ruto and Garissa Township legislator Aden Duale had hired mercenaries to track her down and kill her.
In light of the concerns raised, it is prudent that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) summons the duo to record statements on what they know about the allegations.
In a country where there is a rule of law, all persons irrespective of position in government or society should be subjected to similar legal procedures. If the matter is left unattended at the moment, then the DCI will be forced to act later when it is too late.
In the past, individuals have raised concerns about their safety only to be found murdered by unidentified people who, to date, remain at large. For instance, city businessman Jacob Juma had taken to his social media platforms to raise a red flag that some people were after his life. As a matter of fact, his lifeless body was later retrieved with the DCI vowing to bring the suspects to book. To date, none has been arrested.
With this in mind, DCI should not take chances but summon Ruto and Duale to their offices as a matter of urgency.
