The Kisumu Court of Appeal will get 15 new lawyers to handle the worsening backlog issue in the courts, the court president William Ouko has said.
According to Ouko, the decision was arrived at after a realization that the backlog menace is on the rise, some of the cases dating back to 2014.
He told the Standard on Saturday that the judges will handle 2014 and 2015 appeals for the next one week, and are expected to land in the lakeside county on Sunday.
According to court officials, the judges are as well expected to visit the Kodiaga Prison where some appeal cases have been pending, and will be handling 20 cases a day.
The same was confirmed by Deputy Registrar of the Court Joan Wambiliyanga, who said that the judges are expected to reduce the pending cases from the 1500 they are now.
"The President visited the court in April this year and promised to send judges to handle the pending appeals. The service week is a followup of his promise,” she said.
This follows Kodiaga inmates' complains to the ombudsman earlier in the year, where they complained of a number of issues, including delayed hearings and missing files.
