Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa on Tuesday launched the relief food programme in Garissa town.
In a function jointly presided over by both the national and county government, CS Wamalwa was flanked by the Garissa County Deputy Governor Abdi Dagane.
The function that was held outside the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) Garissa depot involved several lorries full of foodstuffs meant for the locals.
Speaking during the launch, Dagane revealed that Garissa was among 13 counties that are worst hit by the ongoing drought, naming Hulugho area as one of the hardest hit.
"I wish to sincerely thank the national government for coming up with the program. Garissa among other 13 counties urgently need the food rations to curb deaths as a result of the ongoing drought," Dagane said.
On his part, CS Wamalwa reiterated that the national government was committed to battling the ongoing drought.
"As a government, we are very much aware of the ongoing drought and even the possible outcomes. Today we are here to launch this very important exercise in a bid to ensure that no Kenyan dies over hunger," Wamalwa stated.
The exercise saw residents get maize supplies and other foodstuffs.
