I barely got to sleep on the night of January 30, 2019. I was busy reading a piece of newspaper in my room which was overlooking Mount Kenya University but the noise was too loud for my taste.

A carnival had erupted in the school compound as different political aspirants were busy making all the right noises in their campaigns. January 31, would be elections day so they made sure they visited every nook and cranny before the sun rose. Whatever was happening under the stars was no laughing matter.

Early in the morning, I made my way to the school gate and I was welcomed by gigantic posters of different political aspirants. The mood was an exhilarating one as everyone seemed to be as happy as larks. People had already formed queues jamming their way to the indoor arena where the exercise was to be conducted. The comrades were awesomely noisier too than I had ever seen before.

I observed patience even though it felt like ulcers until at last my time to vote came. In the queue, I interviewed a few comrades and they enthusiastically told me they were going to get the leaders of their choice at last.

"Humble types", they said with a grin. Those who could match to any school office and pour out the comrades grievances with ease. Some openly complained that the previous comrades, who at the time of writing this article are still in power, literally neglected and abandoned them once they cemented themselves in luxurious school offices. With a banal excuse that they are busy, busy all the time?

Everyone in the queue seemed hopefull it is as if they had been promised the garden of Eden during campaign periods. Afterwards, I engaged with some delegates like Paul Malusi and he in a baritone, told me that he had trust and confidence from his followers that he would win.

"They have known me for a long time, this journey we started a long time ago," he said.

By Thursday afternoon, the exercise was in the final steps. A few comrades who are rushing from classes are the ones voting, yes from classes. I made some laps when I heard that lectures were still continuing and I can confirm this, thanks to the tough curriculum of 2019.

In the past years, comrades would be seen engaging in expensive hobbies after voting but now the changes can soberly be noted and lecturers have also adhered to that.
