Elachi wants the demolition to continue in order to reclaim and save riparian land.

She says that the demolition is for the benefit of Nairobians who have been exposed to environmental problems as a result of structures sitting on riparian land and road reserves.

“Governor Sonko should continue with the demolition exercise since he has the blessings of the top office and Nairobians,” she told journalists on Tuesday.

The Assembly speaker however called for formulation of proper laws that will stop construction of buildings on riparian land.

She challenged MCAs to come up with laws that will protect public property.

Governor Sonko and the multi-agency team leading demolition says that 4000 buildings on riparian land will be demolished.

On Thursday, the multi-agency team will demolish Taj shopping mall along the Outering road.

The team had issued a two weeks’ notice to tenants to vacate the mall.

The notice lapses on August 30.

Other buildings set to be demolished include  Weston hotel associated with Deputy President William Ruto.
