The Council of Governor's (CoG) elections on Monday at Movenpick hotel in Nairobi County saw Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya clinch the chairmanship position after beating five other contestants in the much-contested race.

Oparanya will serve for a period of one year Murang’a counterpart Mwangi Wa Iria being the deputy.

In the race were Rift Valley’s Jackson Mandago and Josephat Nanok, governors for Uasin Gishu and Turkana counties respectively. The two governors however lost and this is what I expected and ought to have happened.

The first CoG at the inception of devolved units was chaired by former Bomet governor Isaac Ruto. Later in 2017, Nanok took over from former Meru governor Peter Munya.

For this reason, it was not in order for the Rift Valley region to retain the seat yet some other regions had not even had the opportunity to lead the powerful CoG.

Everything was not lost though as Bomet governor Dr Joyce Laboso got to chair the Education committee while professor Paul Chepkwony from Kericho County was elected to chair Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture and Social Services committee.
