A boda boda rider is fighting for his life at Bosongo hospital in Kisii County after he was drugged by a suspected motorbike thief on Friday.
It is alleged that the rider Mark Nyamote was hired to ferry the suspected thief John Ruba from Nyamataro area to Mosocho when he was lured into a local bar where he was drugged.
"Nyamote came into the bar accompanied by Ruba. Ruba ordered 6 bottles of beer for them to drink. He tricked Nyamote to go check where he had parked the motorcycle when he drugged his alcohol," said Kefah Masese, the bar attendant.
Mr. Nyamote reportedly consumed the drugged alcohol and dozed off.
Ruba started searching for the motorbike keys when Nyamote was taken by the sleep. "I raised alarm when I saw what was happening and the suspect tried to escape but we apprehended him," he said.
Area chief Simon Oroo said upon questioning the suspect, he revealed that he had drugged the rider so that he could steal his motorbike.
"The suspect was surrendered to Rigoma police station and he will be arraigned in court on Monday to be charged. The rider was rushed to Bosongo hospital where he is recapturing," said the chief.
Mr. Oroo urged riders to be vigilant to ensure they are not tricked by the thieves who want to earn a living through dubious means.
