The days of corrupt officials are numbered, Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has said.
The first-time governor said that he will fire any county official found engaging in corrupt deals with immediate effect.
Speaking after holding a cabinet meeting at City Hall on Wednesday, Sonko said that corruption has been a thorn in his flesh, adding that he is committed to protecting what belongs to the common mwananchi as long as he remains the governor.
The remarks come at a time Nairobi speaker Beatrice Elachi is fighting to secure her seat after her impeachment over misconduct and misuse of office.
He also said that he will not act like the past regimes that tolerated corrupt workers before he took over office.
“I don’t want to hear about corruption cases in my administration. Our main goal should be service delivery to Mwananchi as we promised during the last election,” said Sonko.
The governor, who has been on the spot over demolition of buildings on riparian land, has maintained that he will serve the people who elected him.
His remarks come amid calls that he returns to City Hall after he relocated to Machakos.
The governor has, however, vowed not to return to the CBD and argues that the place is not far since he can operate comfortably from his home.
MCAs have also threatened to take an action if he does not return to Nairobi with immediate effect.
