The move was prompted by a video he shared of his Kiambu counterpart Governor Ferdinand Waititu giving an interview with a vernacular television station.

Sonko asked his followers to translate Waititu's utterances as the interview was conducted in the Kikuyu language. The flamboyant county boss promised to give anyone who gave the accurate translation Sh5, 000.

"I can hear 022 mentioning about Nairobi again in this meeting. Can someone interpret for me what he's saying please? 5k to the first 40 correct interpretations. Send your safcom number as well," posted Sonko.

Many people took up the challenge and more than five ended up collecting the quick cash which was wired to their M-Pesa accounts pronto.

In a live stream on Facebook, Governor Sonko showed a series of M-Pesa messages sent to his lucky followers to prove that the challenge was indeed genuine.

In the interview, Waititu appeared to implicate former Starehe Member of Parliament Maina Kamanda in land-grabbing scandals in a number of places in Nairobi.

The Kiambu governor argued that the war on corruption had become politicised and was no longer genuine.

Sonko has a reputation for being generous with his money.

He has in the past presented himself to a number of hospitals to clear bills for patients and offer them money for upkeep.
