Two days after the government imposed a 16 percent levy on fuel, blogger Robert Alai advised President Uhuru Kenyatta on what to do.
The National Treasury imposed a 16 percent levy on fuel on September 1.
Alai in a tweet on September 3, urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to cap the VAT at 8 percent but never got a response.
"If I was President, I would reduce VAT to 8% and PAYE by half. I will cut back on taxation but develop reporting structures that no one will probably be escaping paying tax. #OverTaxedKenyans," he tweeted.
However, on Friday, 11 days after his proposal to the President, his input was factored by Uhuru in his amendments into the Finance Bill 2018.
The President announced that he has returned the Finance Bill back to Parliament with a proposal to reduce the VAT on all petroleum products and cap it at 8 percent, down from the current 16 percent.
"I have heard and understood your concerns, which is why I have proposed, as part of my memorandum, to cut VAT on petroleum products by 50%, from 16% to 8%," said Uhuru On Friday while addressing the contentious VAT issue.
Following the President's pronouncement, Alai took to his Twitter page noting that Uhuru, finally considered his proposal despite the fact that he is not an economist.
"Consider my proposal on September 3 and see the move President @UKenyatta has pulled through his #UhuruAddress. Happy that he listened to me. So called economists in this country have no practical proposals. We must use common sense."
