Harambee stars captain Victor Wanyama should be more ambitious and exceed the lolly expectations of his fans to become a top midfielder and even battle it out with the best for available individual accolades.

The Spurs' midfield gem put in a strong performance against Manchester City as his side progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League where they are set to play against an organised Ajax side in a two-legged Champions League tie.

Wanyama is now in a very strong position to play just as well as other established midfielders like Casemiro of Real Madrid or Marco Veratti of Paris Saint Germain.

Reaching the Semis of a competition like the UCL is no mean feat and the Kenyan should really look beyond what his fans think of him.

Many believe that Wanyama should just work hard to gain the favour of manager Mauricio Pochetino and play on a regular basis.

However, that should just be a secondary objective. He should actually make that midfield position his own and look to perform consistently on a daily basis.

He has garnered enough experience already and it is really disheartening to see him lose out on a starter role to the likes of the rather inexperienced Harry Winks and the fairly experienced Moussa Sissoko.

With Sissoko now injured, sadly, Wanyama should rise to the occasion and become a better player, overall. Injuries have hampered the Kenyan captain's career lately but he should really rise and shake it off.

With group C games against Tanzania, Senegal and Algeria coming up in June at the Africa Cup of Nations, Wanyama should perform to become the best.

It has been a while ever since his brother McDonald Mariga rose to the occasion to dominate the Kenyan midfield for a decade or so.
