Young Parliamentarians of Kenya have expressed their displeasure in CS Amina Mohammed's threat to unemployed young graduates for defaulting HELB loans.
The MPs say HELB should increase allocations to students from the current to at least 100,000 contrary to 'peanuts' students are given adding that the interests be waived just as the government does in other ventures.
"The least amount of money a comrade should get is Ksh.100,000, they are currently getting Ksh.40,000, they pay Ksh.28,000 school fees and all they are left with is Ksh.12,000 to cater for their needs,” said Babu Owino.
Speaking on Wednesday at Parliament buildings, the young Members of Parliament led by Embakasi East Mp Babu Owino and Nyali Mp Mohammed Ali alias Jicho Pevu said they will seek an audience with the board officials led by the former Senate speaker Ekwe Ethuro on the matter to scrap the rates.
They have pledged to engage the ministry over the alleged attempt to hike university fees.
The seemingly agitated MPs vowed to file an injunction to stop university managements from hiking fees which have been fronted by University Chancellors.
The lawmakers warned that the move will infringe on the right to access affordable education.
"Increase in tuition fees will deny the students right to education and anyone who is against this is repugnant,” angry Babu Owino said.
Legislator Atandi reiterated that unemployed youth cannot pay the loan hence enlisting students with CRB is suicidal.
"If you are jobless you cannot pay let the government get the young people jobs, they have been promising but have done nothing. The government cannot force us to pay loans yet they have not given us jobs", said Atandi.
The MPs support to students come barely days after students issued an ultimatum else they take on the streets to protest the fee hike by the university top management.
