The announcement came after Cabinet approval on Wednesday where it was declared that the country will seek a non-permanent membership at the Council.

The elections are set to be held during the 74th session of the UN in 2020.

Reports indicate that a campaign strategy has already been drawn.

According to the Cabinet, membership of the UN Security Council will enhance Kenya’s influence in international decision-making “particularly matters of peace and security for the benefit of the nation and the region at large.”

The Security Council is part of the six principal organs of the United Nations mandated with maintaining peace and security in the world.

It is also charged with accepting new members to the United Nations.
