Mombasa County's Department of Youth, Gender, Sports and Cultural Affairs Executive Committee Member Munywoki Kyalo has appointed a Sports Working Committee to liaise and partner with the respective Sports Federations, in order for the County Government of Mombasa to launch a Sports Talent Development Programme within the next 60 days.
The appointment follows a directive from Governor Ali Hassan Joho.
Kyalo said the programme will see young players professionally trained and equipped to commercialize their talent.
"In this regard we shall commence with football, basketball, swimming and golf as we consequently expand to other disciplines where we are working with the respective federations to identify the potential participant," he said.
In a statement, the CeC indicated that this will be reflected in the inclusion of home-grown sportsmen and women in the formation and performance in respective national teams as well as an increase in the number of professional sportsmen and women from Mombasa.
Under the leadership of Joho, the CeC said sports will be used to empower and open more opportunities for the youth.
"Similarly we are committed to expanding the sports infrastructure including the proposed 15,000 iconic Mombasa Stadium - FIFA approved (with indoor facilities including a standard swimming pool), rehabilitate community fields, and upgrade Changamwe volleyball grounds to a modern facility to cater for handball, netball, basketball and volleyball."
