Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka has distanced himself from the ongoing attempts by Western Kenya leaders to unite under the ‘Luhya Unity’ campaign.
Speaking on Radio Citizen early Wednesday, Lusaka rubbished the calls, maintaining that the campaign has no future and is unlikely to deliver.
He faulted the leaders led by Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi for using the push as an excuse to justify their incompetence, further wondering why it only emerges during funeral services.
According to Lusaka, the plot is simply aimed at politically harassing others, cautioning them against using it to lock out aspirants in the approaching 2022 elections.
‘’Mbona hii maneno huwa tu inatokea kwenye matanga? Kisha mambo hayo hubaki huko huko watu wakitoka (the issue only erupts during funerals and never goes past the functions),’’ he said.
‘’Tusiwe tunaungana ili tupige watu vita ama tuwafungie nje (let’s not hide behind the campaign to victimize others politically),’’ he added.
He noted that leaders should instead concentrate on issues directly affecting the people, appealing upon them to join hands and intervene in bettering the worsening agricultural conditions in the sugar belt zone.
This comes at a time when the nation is just recovering from a recent sugar scandal where millions of tonnes of sugar were imported from abroad, affecting local cane farmers.
‘’Ni kweli viongozi wanafaa washirikiane lakini kwa mambo ya maana kama swala la sukari (we need to cooperate on important issues like the sugar factor),’’ said the former Bungoma Governor.
