Deputy President William Ruto attracts a large number of politicians whenever he goes, some using such instances to cross over to his side.

But in his Rift Valley backyard, there exists a group of leaders who though have been his allies since the start, seem to be using the DP's name for political gains.

These are led by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen who is also considered the DP's closest ally and the Majority Leader in the Senate.

Murkomen has been echoing whatever Ruto says, without even giving it a second thought at times, and has always been following the DP around in a manner portraying him as dependent to Ruto.

The most likely reason here is to use his (Ruto) name to appeal to the masses, hoping to be repaid by the voters in his future political endeavours.

For instance, he automatically opposed the March 9 truce between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opoosition leader Raila Odinga after Ruto raised his concerns.

When the DP went silent, he too went silent, and now that the DP is again fighting Raila he is again back, a proper demonstration that he doesn't do it at will but because he has to.

Also in the category is Belgut lawmaker Nelson Koech who just like Murkomen, is always ranting whenever he feels the DP has been 'touched' and then going back silent.

Koech is yet to come out as vocal as he has always done to speak about the deaths that have been reported in Baringo county over the acute water and food shortage being experienced there.

Though he doesn't hail from the county, one would expect him and all other Kalenjin leaders to weigh in on the matter.

Also, he has not been very vocal about the plight of tea growers, most of whom hail from his county of Kericho, but has been very frequent at political functions and fundraisers attended by Ruto.

Finally, there is Kapseret lawmaker Oscar Sudi who was recently engaged in a war of words with President Uhuru Kenyatta over the ongoing purge on graft.

The offensive on Uhuru was most likely a publicity stunt aimed at showing the people, mostly those in the Uasin Gishu county, that he is a diehard supporter of Ruto, the alleged target in the purge.

Otherwise, he wouldn't have bothered to attract the attention and instead took the evidence he has implicating Uhuru in the ongoing investigations to the relevant authorities.

But he chose the noisy way, in an apparent scheme to attract attention which might be useful for him in the future.
