Kilifi North Member of Parliament Owen Yaa Baya has dismissed a list by a local weekly publication that he, alongside his Magarini counterpart Michael Kingi were among MPs who received bribe to shoot down a report on contraband sugar.
The ODM MP has condemned the list saying neither him nor Kingi were in parliament during the day when the report by three committees, the Procedure and House Rules Committee, the House Business Committee and the Liaison Committee was presented in Parliament.
"I would like to put the record straight. The Hon Mike Kingi and I were not in parliament on that day," he said.
Kieni MP Kanini Kega, who is the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Trade, Industry and Cooperatives tabled the report before the House on Thursday last week, only to emerge that members of the committees received bribes to doctor the outcome while MPs allegedly received bribes to dismiss it.
In a communication, Baya said his colleague Michael Kingi was at his Mombasa home recovering from a bout of malaria while he was taking his daughter home to Malindi after spending all hours for her return medical check up.
The lawmaker dismissed the list saying its aim is to tarnish the image of parliament, and that those who took part in bribery can be verified in the CCTV cameras data available in parliament.
"The list published is aimed to tarnish the image of parliament. Those who took part in bribery can be verified in the CCTV cameras data available in parliament and Mike and I are not among those to be in the list," he added on Monday.
The two were elected through ODM whose leader is Raila Odinga. The former premier also condemned the alleged bribery, saying legal action should be taken against MPs who took the bribe.
This even as National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi asked persons who know MPs who received bribes to record statements with his office so as to bring the matter to an end.
