President Uhuru Kenyatta now wants state officials to support the Kenyan brand by donning Kenyan-made clothing going forward.
Uhuru made the request when he commissioned the ultra-modern Rift Valley Textiles (Rivatex) factory in Uasin Gishu county on Friday.
He said that the same will increase demand for the product while, at the same time leading the way in consuming the locally made product.
"Beyond the government, we must create demand for our own products by actively consuming those products ourselves. Towards this objective, let us encourage each other to proudly wear Made in Kenya garments,” he was quoted by the Citizen Digital.
He said that the plant which lost its glory after collapsing in the late 90s, before its recent revival, will create jobs for at least 3000 young people in different capacities.
The president who was personally donning a shirt made by the factory challenged them to wear at least one piece of cloth manufactured by the factory on Fridays.
"For the government to lead by example, I urge all public servants to wear at least one piece of the garment made in Kenya on Fridays," he added.
Also set to benefit are cotton farmers, 500,000 of whom will be able to sell their produce to the firm.
Uhuru at the same time directed the energy ministry to conduct a 50 per cent waiver on power supplied to it.
