According to the The Politics of Betrayal: Diaries of a Kenya politician by Joe Khamisi, Kalonzo’s dream came to a sudden end when he drove to Ruto’s home on an unspecified date in July 2007 only to find Raila’s car parked outside.

The publication records that Kalonzo was not expecting to meet Raila as negotiations on the presidential candidate continued to take place.

The Ukambani political kingpin was optimistic that Ruto would back him for the post.

It is recorded that the first thing the Wiper leader saw as he drove into the compound was Raila’s car parked on the driveway.

It was at this point that his worries began.

He wondered what was happening at Ruto’s home.

Kalonzo was left speechless when Ruto told him to change his mind.

Ruto asked Kalonzo to play second fiddle to Raila, adding that he was ready to take any position.

“Withdraw your presidential bid and accept the vice-presidency. Let Raila be the flag-bearer,“ Ruto told Kalonzo.

Both Kalonzo and Ruto have expressed their interests in the nation’s top seat come 2022.
