Scores of people have cast aspersions on the validity of the doctoral degrees awarded by universities in the country.

Adding to that list of people who have expressed their reservations is former presidential candidate Prof James Ole Kiyiapi.

In a reply to a tweet that had been made by Prof Makau Mutua, Prof Ole Kiyiapi shared his scepticism, saying that strange things were happening in this country.

"Prof, strange things are happening in this country: not just the serious concerns about how doctoral degrees are earned or dished out, politicians 'earning' Masters degrees is common place, fellows who have never taught in any university give themselves titles of professorship!" Prof Ole Kiyiapi's reply read.

The graduation ceremony was presided over by JKUAT's Chancellor Prof Joseph Mathu.

Over 3000 graduands from an array of disciplines graduated.

Ole Kiyiapi's remarks come amid a raging national debate on the quality of degrees being churned out by universities in the country.

Tens of thousands of students in Kenya graduate every single year to fight for limited opportunities in the job market.

Education CS Prof George Magoha has stated his intentions to ensure degree programmes being offered by universities are standard.
